‘Maharashtra Labourers at Rest’ – most probably Bombay, British India, c1850s

from £4.99

Photographs from before 1860, of everyday people at work in India are rare and when discovered need to be valued. What is of equal interest is how the title given to this photograph, ‘Ghati C****ies’ which reflect the colonialist mentality of the time with both words being highly derogatory terms. Ghati used to describe people of Maharashtrian descent or Maharashtra region in India, inferring that they are uncultured and ignorant people. And ‘C***ie’, a racially insulting name for an unskilled native labourer in India, and people of South Asian descent.
