The sewing machine was the world’s first mass produced and mass marketed complex consumer durable, diffusing more widely around the world than any other consumer good before 1914 and this global diffusion was almost the sole responsibility of one firm, Singer.
Introduced in 1859 in India, they only began to enter the country in substantial numbers in the late 1890s. Its widespread popularity throughout rural provinces was in particular due to Singer’s commercial innovation of, the combination of instalment purchase contract and the regular presence of canvassers and collectors meant that sewing machine consumers, women in their homes, were able to overcome the inherent uncertainties associated with such a purchase.
