‘A Woman’s Work is Never Done’ – unknown early 1900s.

from £4.99

An extremely rare photograph from the early 1900s, this back yard scene illustrates the times perfectly. A discarded rum barrel used as a wash tub, clothes rubbed vigorously with the familiar blue cake soap, a typical everyday situation for some, for others, the nearby river was used to wash clothes.
This one photograph typifies how challenging things were at the time, skirt made from rough hessian, rope used as a belt, tattered washed clothes hung to dry, yet the look on her face shows her determination as a woman to overcome societies, so many obstacles.
