Maubi Woman -Barbados c.1950s

from £4.99

Mauby is a drink that is consumed in Barbados and is made from the bark of the Mauby tree, boiled with cinnamon, orange peel, nutmeg and cloves, and sweetened to taste. The arrival of Mauby Women in twentieth-century Barbados can best be described as the beginning of the drink’s popularity. People throughout the island recognised them as dedicated vendors who walked dusty plantation roads and busy urban streets with large canisters filled with mauby balanced on their heads.
